The Dam at Cherokee Bluffs, as it was referred to in the 1920's, was completed in 1926. It was later to be named Martin Dam after Thomas W. Martin, one of the early officers of Alabama Power Company.
Construction of the Dam was a remarkable feat and created a complete town around the dam to house workers and even included a hospital.
