Jimmy K. Lanier Fire Lookout Tower
This park is provided by Alabama Power Company and provides a wonderful setting with picnic tables, seating area, and observation platform for probably the best view of Lake Martin.
CRATA’s first trails constructed in 2004 consist of three (3) trails for a total of 7.2 miles. All three trails are tied together so you can hike from 1 mile to 7 miles with several combinations.
Great views of Lake Martin, mountain longleaf pine, native azaleas, and mountain laurel are just a few of the interesting things that will delight the hiker.
Listed below are the combinations that make the trails at Overlook Park a unique hiking experience.
Just a short distance down Overlook Drive from Overlook Park is the newly erected Jimmy K. Lanier Fire Lookout Tower. The 1930’s tower was donated to CRATA and taken down in Sedley, Virginia by a crew of CRATA volunteers. It was then transported to Alabama to begin a four-year process of restoration and renovation of every piece of steel on the tower. With the added safety features and improved engineering, this tower is one of the safest fire lookout towers in the United States. The view of Lake Martin from the 110 ft. tower is simply incredible and one of the most scenic views in all of Alabama!
